چکیده

background the process of neoplastic transformation in the stomach has been reported to be associated with decreased expression of normal mucins of the gastric mucosa and denovo expression of mucins that are normally expressed in other organs. this association may be used as a means to bring new insights into biologic behavior and genetic pathways in the development of gastric cancer. there are controversial reports about differences in the genetic pathway and behavior of gastric cancer in younger patients in comparison with older ones. this study aims to determine if there is any difference in mucin profiles among different age groups with gastric cancer. methods over a five-year (2003-2008) period, 43 cases of gastric cancer ≤50 years were referred to our center. of these, 40 had adequate tissue for additional study, whereas three cases lacked a sufficient amount of tumor tissue for immunohistochemistry (ihc) analysis. a group of 40 gastric cancer patients above the age of 50 years were gender-matched with the first group. expressions of muc-1, muc-2, muc-5ac, and muc-6 were evaluated by ihc for the total 80 gastric cancer cases. results the expressions of the mucins did not show a significant difference between the two age groups. conclusion gastric cancer in both young and old age adults was not significantly different in terms of mucin profiles. our results have shown that younger age is not predictive of gastric cancer phenotype, which can be an indicator of the lack of difference in the genetic pathways and molecular alterations in these two age groups.

Nuclear factor-κB1 expression levels in human gastric adenocarcinoma

NF-κB pathway is a link between inflammation and cancer and is involved in cellular responses to different stimuli. Gastrointestinal lumen is exposed to many inflammatory agents such as foods, free radicals and bacterial or viral antigens. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible role of NF-κB1in gastric adenocarcinoma. To detect the relative level of NF-κB1transcript, total RN...

Serrated Adenoma of Gastric Antrum: Alteration of Mucin Expression Profile and its Role in Carcinogenesis

Serrated adenomas usually occur in colon, the gastric localization is extremely rare. These polyps have their own carcinogenetic pathway with microsatellite instability. In this report, we present a serrated adenoma localized in gastric antrum with four control endoscopies and biopsies. Immunohistochemical panel of MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC6 was applied to the biopsies. Serrated component, MU...

IN TRAOPERATIVE RADIATION THERAPY FOR GASTRIC ADENOCARCINOMA

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is a multidisciplinary approach in which residual tumors or tumor beds are directly irradiated during a surgical procedure. To evaluate its efficacy, from 1985, we conducted a prospective study including non-metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma treated by surgery, IORT (15 Grays) and postoperative external beam radiotherapy (44 Grays). Up to 1993, 51 ca...

Comparison of OGG1 gene expression level in gastric adenocarcinoma and adjacent normal tissue

Background and aims: Gastric cancer is a major public health issue as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in the world. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce DNA damage and this process plays an important role in gastric cancer development and progression. OGG1 is an essential component of the base excision repair pathway  that is required for the removal of oxidized guanine nucl...

Aquaporin 5 expression increases mucin production in lung adenocarcinoma.

Our recent studies have demonstrated that AQP5 is involved in the metastatic potential of lung cancer. Here, our aim was to explore the effects of AQP5 expression on mucin production in lung adenocarcinoma. We tested MUC5AC and MUC5B mucin production induced by AQP5 expression in lung adenocarcinoma metastasis. Lung adenocarcinoma cells with different levels of AQP5 expression were used in this...
